Family Resource Centers
The Genesee Region Teacher Center has initiated the formation of three Family Resource Centers located in the public libraries in Attica, Byron-Bergen and Corfu. These resource centers are geared towards parents, nursery school teachers and daycare providers of pre-kindergarten children. The NYS Education Department is asking Teacher Centers to provide a continuum of professional development and educational follow through from grades pre-K to college. In this way, there will hopefully be no gaps in the educational development of students at one point. The GRTC has collaborated with GCC, SUC at Brockport and the University of Rochester in the past, but has never served the pre-k community. The establishment of pre-k classes at many area school districts is also indicative of the importance of early childhood literacy. It is hoped that more Family Resource Centers will be established in the near future. At these centers, educational games, books, story bags and educational websites will be available to families. Books are also accessible for teachers and daycare providers on child disabilities, learning styles, classroom management and other pertinent topics.
