HEALTH

.5 High School Credit

Health is a ½ year class which is required for graduation and often taken the sophomore year. The curriculum will focus around 7 units: mental health, nutrition, fitness, alcohol, nicotine products, other substances, and HIV/STD’s. Throughout the year, sensitive issues/ topics are discussed where students appreciate the tactfulness of the information provided. This class develops the environment and relationships where individuals feel comfortable to discuss these topics when it’s sometimes difficult to discern the truth from fiction at this point in their lives.  

At the completion of the class, students will gain a better understanding of current health issues and be able to demonstrate positive, healthier choices that will be beneficial throughout a lifetime. Also, computer skills will be improved by utilizing the Google Classroom for daily agendas, class notes, assignments, activities, and supplemental resources.

INTRODUCTION TO HEALTHFUL LIVING

College Credit Available: HED 204 Introduction to Healthy Living, 3 Credits

This 20 week advanced studies class will emphasize reasons and strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Students are eligible to receive 3 credit hours through GCC for successfully completing the class.  As part of GCC's Assessment Plan, a Personal Wellness Profile will be a workable document throughout the 20 weeks to improve personal, healthful living goals.

Content for the course includes health and wellness, stress, drugs, alcohol, nicotine products, nutrition and weight control, cardiovascular health, physical fitness, healthy relationships, sexuality, birth control, STI's, safety education, communication skills for productive relationships, identifying and reporting suspected child abuse and maltreatment, and Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Legislation SAVE certification. 

Students must have taken High School Health as a prerequisite for this course.

FOODS ON YOUR OWN

.5 High School Credit

This 20 week course will prepare students to be able to put together healthy, affordable meals once they are on their own.  Topics and techniques to be covered include: meal planning and timing, recipe adjustment, grocery shopping and food budgets, kitchen set up and equipment, adapting to special dietary needs, food safety & practical culinary techniques.  This elective will incorporate lecture, research, and classroom activities, demonstrations, lab cooking experiences, and field trips or guest speakers.  Limit 16 students per class

LIFE SKILLS

.25 High School Credits

Young adults will, at some point, leave home and live independently.  Older teens often feel they can take the big step towards independent living without having all of the life skills needed to succeed.  This 10 week elective class will provide teens with the necessary information and skills to become successful after high school, whether college bound or entering the workforce.

Due to the content of the course, juniors and seniors would highly benefit from this class, but mature underclassmen are also welcome.

ADDICTIONS

.25 High School Credit

We are all vulnerable to addiction.  Whether it's a compulsion to constantly check social media, binge eating, smoking/vaping, excessive drinking, or any other behaviors we may find ourselves uncontrollably repeating.  Why are bad habits so hard to overcome?  Is  there a key to conquering the cravings we know are unhealthy for us?  This class will explore answers to the most important questions about addiction.

Students must have taken high school Health as a prerequisite for this course.

CHILDREN AND LIFE

.5 High School Credit

This 20 week course covers the basics of effective parenting including child development, communication, and managing family dynamics. It also includes vital training in infant/child CPR and first aid. Through discussions and activities, students gain practical insights and skills for caregiving roles, equipping them for successful parenting and ensuring child safety.

INTRODUCTION TO TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY

.5 High School Credit

This course provides an overview of the tourism and hospitality industries, focusing on the importance of customer service. Students will learn about industry leaders and different business types such as: independent, chain, franchised and e-commerce. They'll also explore the daily operations of lodging and food service, covering management, marketing, facilities, HR, finances, and technology. Additionally, the course presents career options in attractions, catering, casinos, cruises, clubs, events, resorts, restaurants, and exhibitions.

FOOD & BEVERAGE MANAGEMENT

College Credit Available: THM 114 Food & Beverage Management, 3 Credits

This course explores all aspects of management and service of food and beverages from the customer's viewpoint as a means of understanding what makes a successful food service business. Provides a basis for understanding the responsibilities and challenges in the management of food and beverage businesses.

HOTEL OPERATIONS

College Credit Available: THM 103 Hotel Operations, 3 Credits

.5 High School Credit

This course focuses on the organization and structure of hotel operations. Addresses organization and management responsibilities within each department including: the front office, housekeeping, engineering, and security. Examines the role of the sales and marketing department in the financial success of the hotel, and food and beverage services for their important part in the overall hotel product.
