BAND
1 High School Credit
Students signing up for the Attica Senior High Band must play a band instrument. As a member of the band, students will be exposed to both Concert Band and Marching Band literature. You will receive one credit per year for band. The band performs 3 or 4 concerts a year, 4 home athletic events in the fall and 10 spring competitive parades. The band is a very important part of the school community.
CHORUS
1 High School Credit
This vocal performing group is open to students in grades 9 – 12. Requirements: attendance and active participation in daily rehearsals, attendance at two concert performances per year, basic knowledge of vocal music and the singing mechanism, as well as the desire for further learning. One credit is earned per year.
As a member in good standing of the Attica High School Chorus, students may choose to participate in the following Music Festivals through the school year:
Senior High Area All-State Chorus – Students in grades 10 – 12 from 65 schools are chosen to participate based on NYSSMA Solo ratings and teacher recommendations.
Genesee/Wyoming All-County Chorus – Students from 10 schools in grades 9 – 12 are chosen to participate based on an audition.
NYSSMA Solo Festival – Any student with sufficient musical ability and desire to perform a NYSSMA graded solo may participate.
NYSSMA Conference All-State Chorus – Students in grades 11 & 12 are selected from the State of New York based on superior NYSSMA solo ratings, musical ability and teacher recommendation.
MUSIC THEORY
1 High School Credit
The music theory course is designed to enhance music skills and basic music fundamentals through exploration and analysis. Throughout the year, students will study pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony, intervals, music form, and composition.
MUSIC IN OUR LIVES
.5 High School Credit
This class will explore the social, cultural, and historical importance of music around the world. We will study the evolution of musical styles from different parts of the world and discuss how understanding music from around the world contributes to musical preferences in modern society. In addition, we will study the business side of the multi billion dollar music industry. What are the jobs of the music industry and what do these people actually do?
INTRODUCTION TO PIANO SKILLS
.5 High School Credit
This class will teach the basics of playing the piano. We will learn how to read standard music notation as well as lead sheets. We will play music from a variety of different musical styles and students will learn how to teach themselves music for continued playing after the conclusion of the class. This class is intended for beginner piano students, not students with prior training and experience.
THEATER
.25 High School Credit
Students will learn about the historical aspects of theatrical musical/Broadway performances and plays. Students will engage in theatrical skits and learn how to act, speak, and sound. They will learn how to write original works and perform them.
