SPANISH 1

1 High School Credit

The study of foreign language requires daily work and preparation on the part of the student to be successful. Spanish 1 is an introduction to the language in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Basic grammatical skills are also developed at this level. Through the use of various types of activities, the students acquire a basic knowledge of Spanish.   These basic skills will serve as a foundation throughout the student’s study of the language. The first year also includes an introduction to the study of Spanish and Spanish-American culture, geography and awareness of the Spanish language around us.

SPANISH 2

1 High School Credit

Spanish II is a continuation of the basic skills practiced in Spanish I (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Verb tenses as well as more advanced grammatical skills and idiomatic expressions are studied. This more advanced study is to enable the student to become more competent in his/her writing skills, as well as to become more comprehensive in reading skills. A Spanish-English dictionary is required for this course.

SPANISH 3

1 High School Credit

Final Exam - Regional LOTE Spanish

Spanish III continues the first two levels with a higher degree of complexity introduced in all skills. More reading comprehension is emphasized in addition to more speaking in the language. The third year of a study of the language concludes with a regional examination which tests minimum knowledge of Spanish in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Topics (vocabulary) for the first three levels of Spanish correspond to those suggested in the New York State syllabus at checkpoint B for LOTE. (Language Other Than English)

SPANISH 4

1 High School Credit

College Credit Available:SPA201 Intermediate Spanish I

Spanish IV is offered to the students who wish to continue his/her study of Spanish. The study of Spanish literature is a major part of work at this level. The use of all language skills is required throughout the year. A student project and a 5 minute oral presentation pertaining to Hispanic people is required at this level.

The student has the option of receiving college credit for this course through Genesee Community College. Students taking for college credit will be required to take 4 on-line quizzes for GCC.

SPANISH 5

1 High School Credit

College Credit Available: SPA202 Intermediate Spanish II

Spanish V is offered to the accelerated student who wishes to continue his/her study of the language. The use of all language skills is required throughout the year. This course will emphasize communications via the spoken language and focus on the use of technology in the study of Spanish and culture. Several projects pertaining to history and culture will be required.

The student has the option of receiving college credit through GCC.  They will be required to do four on-line quizzes, as well as a written report and an oral presentation of 10 minutes.

STUDY OF WORLD CULTURES THROUGH FILM

1 High School Credit

Introduction, discussion, and analysis of world cultures through the medium of film.  Emphasis on the history and structures of contemporary society of other lands, and on the cultural meaning of film.  Use of basic tools of film analysis and analysis of the specific aesthetic qualities of a film.  Offered in English.  Various cultures and historical events will be discussed and analyzed throughout the school year.
