August 23, 2023 Dear Attica Central School District Families, I can’t believe we are less than two weeks before the start of school. First, welcome back to the start of a new and inspiring school year! As we prepare to embark on this exciting journey, I am thrilled to share our theme for the 2023-2024 academic year: "Nurturing Hearts, Empowering Minds: A Year of Social-Emotional Learning." At Attica Central School District, we believe that education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. This year, our focus is on cultivating strong social-emotional skills that will empower our students to succeed not only academically but also as compassionate and resilient individuals. Social-emotional learning (SEL) equips students with the tools they need to manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and navigate life's challenges. Why SEL Matters: Research shows that students who receive quality SEL education are more likely to excel academically, establish healthy relationships, and lead fulfilling lives. By focusing on SEL, we are investing in our students' overall well-being and setting them up for success in every aspect of their lives *(Mahoney, J.L., Durlak, J.A., & Weissberg, R.P. (2018). What to Expect: Throughout the year, our dedicated educators will incorporate SEL into our curriculum and daily interactions. We will explore themes of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. You can look forward to workshops, activities, and resources that support both students and families in developing these essential skills. Supporting Each Other: We recognize that fostering social-emotional growth is a collaborative effort between our schools and families. We invite you to join us on this journey by engaging in open conversations at home, participating in school events, and reinforcing SEL concepts in your daily interactions. Health and Safety: The health and safety of our students and staff remain our top priority. As we implement SEL, we also recognize the importance of emotional well-being in our community's overall health. I am excited to announce the partnership with Care Solace, a mental health care coordination service that will be working with us to help provide wraparound support for our students and families in need. Get Involved: We encourage you to stay connected with our school district through our website, newsletters, and social media platforms. You can find valuable resources, updates on SEL initiatives, and information about upcoming events that promote family involvement. In closing, I am excited to embark on this journey of social-emotional growth alongside each and every one of you. Let's work together to nurture hearts and empower minds, creating a positive and supportive environment for our students to flourish. Here's to a year filled with growth, connection, and meaningful learning experiences! Sincerely, Kiel Illg, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools Attica Central School District Citation: *(Mahoney, J.L., Durlak, J.A., & Weissberg, R.P. (2018). An update on social and emotional learning outcome research. Phi Delta Kappan, 100 (4), 18-23.).

Dear Attica CSD Families, The kids had a great day. Buses left the HS/MS about 10 minutes behind schedule as we ensured all children loaded onto the correct bus. Have a great night.
