Attica Superintendent Dr. Kiel Illg welcomes and elementary school student to the first day of school on Sept. 3.

There’s something not quite right about a place that isn’t being used for its intended purpose.

You know what I mean if you’ve ever walked through a ballpark in January, a quiet shopping mall, or a school in the summertime. For two months here in Attica, our parking lots were empty, our sports fields were silent, and our hallways—usually filled with students moving from class to class—sat still and quiet.

That all changed earlier this month when we welcomed our students back for the start of the 2025–26 school year! If there’s a perfect remedy for a summer’s worth of silence, it’s standing outside the doors of Attica Elementary and high-fiving students as they step off the bus for their first day of school. The excitement and energy of that first day was a powerful reminder that students bring life, purpose, and joy to our schools.

It’s in this contrast between the quiet of summer and the energy of a new year that I was reminded: a school is more than four walls and a roof. Those structures stand year-round, but it’s when our students, teachers, and staff fill them with learning, exploration, and growth that they truly come alive.

Our year is off to a strong start, and the momentum is only building as we look forward to Homecoming Week at the end of the month. This cherished tradition is more than just a celebration of student accomplishments—it’s an opportunity to strengthen the bond between our schools and the community we serve. When families, neighbors, alumni, and local partners come together to cheer on our students, attend events, and share their pride, it shows our young people that they are valued, supported, and part of something bigger than themselves.

We invite you to join us, whether that’s lining Main Street for our annual parade, cheering under the lights at Alumni Field, or simply sharing in the spirit of pride that defines our community. Together, we honor tradition, celebrate achievement, and look ahead to new opportunities for innovation and growth.

Our Homecoming Parade begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 at Favor St., will head east on Main Street and wrap up at our middle/high school bus loop. Our homecoming football game against Geneseo/Mount Morris kicks off under the lights of Alumni Field right after at 7 p.m. We hope to see you at both events!

Thank you for your continued support of Attica Central School District. With your partnership, I know this school year will be filled with unity, joy, and lasting memories.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kiel Illg
