Dear Attica Central School Community,
At Attica Central School District, we are committed to empowering, fostering, and advancing education for a brighter future. That commitment requires us to prepare students not only with strong academic skills, but with the creativity, confidence, and resilience they will need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. While a solid foundation in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history remains essential, a truly comprehensive education must also nurture the intellectual, social, emotional, and creative dimensions of every child.
The arts are central to that work.
Too often, the arts are described as enrichment, as though they are peripheral to “real” learning. In reality, they are foundational. Through the arts, students develop discipline, persistence, collaboration, and the courage to take thoughtful risks. They learn to interpret, reflect, revise, and present their ideas with clarity and confidence. These are not secondary skills; they are essential competencies that will serve our students throughout their lives.
I am proud to share that here in Attica, the arts are not simply present — they are thriving.
Their impact is visible at the Arts Council for Wyoming County Gallery in Perry, where our students’ original works are featured in the Council’s annual All-High School Art Show. It is evident on the stage of our Performing Arts Center, where the cast and crew of our Drama Club’s production of The Wizard of Oz have dedicated countless hours preparing for their Feb. 27 and 28 performances. And in early March, it will resonate throughout our high school gymnasium as student musicians from our middle and high schools come together for our annual Band in the Round concert.
I have seen firsthand how the arts cultivate a powerful sense of ownership in our students. When they create a visual work, perform on stage, or produce a digital project, they are not simply completing an assignment — they are bringing something uniquely their own into the world. The arts elevate student voice, perspective, and choice, allowing each child to see their ideas take shape in meaningful and tangible ways.
Equally important is the opportunity to share their work with others. When students present their creations to classmates, families, and the broader community, they experience pride, connection, and confidence. These moments reinforce that their contributions matter and that their creativity has value. In doing so, the arts strengthen both individual growth and the culture of our entire school community.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership and for the many ways you support and celebrate the creative pursuits of our students. Together, we will continue to ensure that every child in Attica has access to a well-rounded education that honors both tradition and innovation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kiel Illg
Superintendent of Schools
