Fun day today down at Attica Elementary as students in Mrs. Laura O’Donnell’s and Mrs. Elizabeth Winters’s AP biology, honors biology and physics classes as well as Best Buddies and Science Club members led our younger students in an activity to build and test lung-powered straw rockets as part of our annual STEM Day!
High schoolers worked with elementary schoolers to make the rockets using straws, paper, paper, index cards, paper clips and a bit of tape.
Then, elementary schoolers tested their rockets out in the hallway and made improvements based on how they performed.
Students then conducted a final test, recorded the distance their rocket traveled and compared them to their classmates, with the top 3 farthest distances in each class earning a prize!
As an added challenge, some of our older students conducted several rocket tests, calculated the average distance their rockets traveled, then charted their and their classmates’ results on a graph.
