Please see the following message from Superintendent Dr. Kiel Illg: After careful consideration and consultation with peers, emergency management services, administration and our Board of Education, I have made the decision to close schools on Monday, April 8, 2024 due to the Solar Eclipse. Given the unique circumstances being created by the Solar Eclipse (ie. including the challenges of anticipated traffic issues and concerns of the lack of availability of emergency services), our availability of "snow days/emergency closure days" built into our calendar and our ongoing review of the calendar we have decided to make the instructional changes at this time. I understand that this change may require adjustments for students, parents, and staff members, and we will work diligently to communicate this decision effectively beginning today. I am hopeful that announcing this decision now will provide families and our employees more appropriate time to plan for the change of the instructional calendar. Additionally, there will be no activities or events and all buildings/offices will be closed. I hope you enjoy the day with your family, friends and loved ones. Thank you, Kiel Illg, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools

Attica students joined 600 others from 31 school districts across Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties at Genesee Community College last week for GLOW With Your Hands: Healthcare, a career exploration expo designed to connect students with local employers in the healthcare industry. Launched in 2023, GLOW With Your Hands: Healthcare connected students to more than 200 representatives from 57 companies, municipal agencies, non-profits, and educational institutions. In addition to meeting with representatives from local employers, every student participated in a pair of self-selected workshops with a variety of healthcare careers led by healthcare and emergency response professionals. Sessions covered careers in EMS, pharmacy, healthcare administration, physical therapy, healthy living, physicians/residents, holistic medicine, radiology/sonography/ultrasound, mental health and social work, research science, nursing, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, physician’s assistant/nurse practitioner, surgery and vet technician.

We were at GCC yesterday for Tech Wars and look who we spotted hanging on the wall - former Attica girls volleyball, basketball and softball coach Margaret ‘Peg’ Sisson! Peg was inducted into GCC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 and Attica’s Athletic Hall of Fame just last year.

A contingent of Attica eighth grade students accompanied Mr. John Versage to Genesee Community College Yesterday for Tech Wars, an annual BOCES-sponsored event that pits students from school districts across the region against each other in a variety of STEM-based competitions. Students competed in the Middle School C02 Car Race using vehicles they’d designed, built and tested in Versage’s technology class over the past few weeks. Special shout out to Noah Sabatino, Charlie Feldmann and Troy Savage, Attica’s top finishers in the event who took 8th, 9th and 13th place, respectively. Great job!

Our sixth graders visited Merle Maple Farms yesterday Students took a wagon ride to learn about how trees are tapped, walked through the sugar house while learning how the syrup is processed. After that, students got to sample some of Merle’s products, including their soft serve maple ice cream - yum! Thanks to Merle Maple for having us! (Photos courtesy of Allison Cali)

Our fourth graders had a great time on their field trip to Rochester last week. First, students headed to Kodak Hall at Eastman Theater for a concert by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The theme of the concert was "Going West," with selections centered on the California Gold Rush. Songs included "Mambo" from "West Side Story," the "Finale" of Rossini's "William Tell Overture" and "Horse and Buggy" by Leroy Anderson, among others. The performance was part of the RPO’s education concert series and included images of student drawings and their dreams of the future. Then, it was off to the Memorial Art Gallery where students were given a guided tour of the gallery’s collection of ancient, classical and contemporary art. They even got the chance to take in Claude Monet’s “Waterloo Bridge, Veiled Sun,” one of a 41-painting series the French impressionist completed of London’s former Waterloo Bridge between 1900 and 1904 that is on permanent display at the MAG. Attica’s National Honor Society chapter welcomed 20 new members during an induction ceremony in our Performing Arts Center last week. Our chapter officers spoke on the four National Honor Society pillars - character, scholarship, leadership and service - before new members were welcomed into the chapter and administered their oath. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to apply for membership in the society if they’ve achieved a cumulative grade point average of 90 percent at the close of the second quarter prior to the invitation period. Invited students then sit for an interview with the chapter’s five-member faculty advisory committee, which ultimately votes on what new members to accept. Students inducted into the district’s NHS chapter were Alyssa Armstrong, Robert Beck, Elle Brydalski, Madelyn Burger, Samuel Dunlap, Alyssa George, Beau Hyman, Anna Martino, Kristen Miller, Dylan Mirrione, Julie Pawlak, Rachel Rickettson, Nolan Rzepka, Vanessa Schlau, Avery Schmidbauer, Amelia Signor, Erin Snyder, Boden Spink, Abigail Wilkinson and Addyson Zawilski. Congratulations to our newest National Honor Society members and thank you to all those who submitted photos!

How cool is this? Members of our High School Youth Empowerment Club recently made a Take What You Need Wall in one of our hallways! The idea, said club member Alanna Pellicane, is to spread positivity to anyone who might need it. “There are cards with different positive and inspiring messages on them,” Alanna explained, “ and students can take the one that applies to them. Students can then put them in their phone, lockers or chromebooks and have a positive message to glance at throughout the day whenever they need to.” (Photos courtesy of Alanna Pellicane)

Our fourth graders have been working hard researching national parks and weather phenomena as part of their most recent units in social studies and science. Students then drew on both areas of knowledge to create a weather report for their chosen park and, in collaboration with Genesee Valley BOCES, recorded that report using a camera and greennscreen. Students presented their recorded reports during our Fourth Grade Family Night earlier this month - it was a huge success! Students walked away with research and presentation skills after completing both units. Way to go, fourth graders! (Photos courtesy of Katie Kennedy)

Our Strategic Planning Committee assembled in the High School Library today for a workshop facilitated by Michael Cornell. Cornell, superintendent of the Hamburg Central School District, is also a consultant who specializes in helping districts navigate the strategic planning process. Our committee, which includes administrators, teachers, staff, Board of Education members, students and parents, is working to create a strategic plan for Attica Central Schools. Once complete, this plan will function as a comprehensive roadmap that outlines our vision, mission, core values and actions for the coming years and help us navigate the evolving landscape of education while remaining committed to our aspirations for the District.
