Attica Central School District was recently notified by its dairy supplier, Upstate Niagara Cooperative, that a nationwide shortage of half-pint paper milk cartons will affect its ability to supply its customers - including Attica. In light of this anticipated shortage, Attica Central School District will be purchasing half-gallon containers of milk instead of half-pint containers. In the elementary school, food service staff will be pouring cups of milk for students at lunch time. In the middle and high schools, our food service staff has set up a self-service station where students can pour their own cup of milk. In its recent communication with our district, Upstate Niagara stated the shortage may resolve in early 2024 and that it’s working with its own vendors to try to speed that timeline along. Questions should be directed to Food Service Director Kris Wicks at kwicks@atticacsd.org or (585) 591-0400, ext. 1195. We’re proud to support our local dairy producers and offer milk to our students however we can!

This past weekend, Kate Metzger and Kara Hassenfratz traveled to Rush-Henrietta Senior High School to perform as part of the New York State School Music Association’s Area All-State Treble Choir! Kate and Kara were selected for this prestigious ensemble based on their performance last year at NYSSMA’s Solo Festival. They performed under the direction of Dr. Doreen Fryling, an associate professor of music at Hofstra University, alongside the best vocalists in NYSSMA’s eight-county Zone 2 region. The group sounded fantastic (obviously). Check out a little snippet from one of their rehearsals in the video linked below! Well done, ladies! John Whalen, co-founder of EdTomorrow, a company that specializes in the implementation of restorative and social-emotional learning practices in school settings, spent the past couple of days visiting classrooms at Attica Elementary School to lead students in “circles.” Circles are a cornerstone of restorative practices. They’re typically used to foster a climate of trust and support among a group of peers and are an important tool for helping students learn about one another and develop positive relationships. Thanks for stopping by, John - our students learned a lot! In the accompanying photos, Whalen is shown leading a circle in Mrs. Kennedy’s and Mrs. Lathigee’s fourth grade class. Our elementary schoolers welcomed veterans from Attica’s American Legion Harder-O’Donnell Post 734 to their monthly assembly last week. Select students from each grade read prepared statements about why they value veterans before our entire student body came together to sing an armed forces medley, recognizing each of the five branches of the U.S. Military - the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. To wrap things up, our students and staff gave attending veterans a standing ovation as a thank you for their service. Check out the video linked below for scenes from the assembly! Don’t forget - Veterans Day is this Saturday, Nov. 11, so make sure you reach out to the veterans in your life to thank them for their sacrifice! Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFYWYLe18i4

Your Attica Blue Devils take on the Section VI Champion Portville Panthers this Friday, Nov. 10, in Letchworth in the Far West Regionals. The winner will punch their ticket to the state semifinals next weekend at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, Warren County. The match starts at 7 p.m. at Letchworth High School, 5550 School Rd., Gainesville. Tickets are $8.35 and can be purchased online through GoFan at the link below or by scanning the QR code in the accompanying image. The match will be livestreamed on the NFHS Network. Portville is a perennial volleyball powerhouse and is currently ranked as the #1 Class C team in the state, according to the New York Volleyball Coaches Association. In the past 9 seasons, Portville has won 6 New York State Championships. The three years the Panthers did not win a state title were 2016, when it failed to qualify for the state tournament, 2019, when it finished as runner up Section I’s Valhalla, and in 2020, when no tournament was held due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Panthers are 19-1 on the season and have not dropped a set since a 2-3 loss to Lancaster in August in their first match of the season. Attica, meanwhile, remains perfect on the season at 21-0 and has dropped just 6 six its entire season. This one promises to be a heavyweight matchup between two high quality teams. As part of the 2019-2024 School Climate grant award of $2.8 million dollars through the U.S. Department of Education, we are required to regularly conduct a survey about school climate. The survey will be administered to students in grades 5-12 during PE classes beginning Nov. 20. It will ask students about their perceptions on topics such as student engagement, school environment, and school safety. No questions about your child’s personal habits or behaviors will be asked, and students will not be identified in any way. Each student is assigned a randomly-generated unique code and that will serve as their login ID. The answers your child provides will be used by the district to better understand the current climate in the middle and high schools, and decisions about the use of grant funds and the best types of programs to offer students will be made based in part on the answers collected in the survey. As mentioned, the survey is completely anonymous and completely voluntary, although the more responses we receive the more accurate our data will be and the better our program decisions will be. Your child’s answers will be combined with the answers of other students at their school, and these reports will not identify any person or their responses. If you do not want your child to participate in this survey, please send an email to commsurvey@atticacsd.org or call Director of Curriculum Matt Stroud at (585) 591-0400, ext. 3001. If you leave a message by the close of school on Wednesday, Nov. 15 stating that you do not want your child to participate, your child will not participate in the survey and will be asked to engage in an unrelated activity during the time that students in his or her class are taking the survey. In your message, please include the following information: Your name, the name of your student(s), and their current grade level. If no message is received, we will administer the survey to your child(ren). If you have any questions about this survey please contact Matt Stroud at (585) 591-0400, ext. 3001. The survey can also be seen online at the link below.
