Hello Attica Faculty, Staff, and Parents. The district continues to work on reporting requirements from the New York State Education Department (NYSED). This update is to inform you, as a district stakeholder, of the plans being reported on and to solicit feedback from stakeholders, specifically by 11/15/23 for this reporting period. Please also be advised that feedback will be accepted on a continual basis throughout the entire time frame of these funding sources. Section 9-a of part A of chapter 56 of the laws of 2021, as amended by §5-a of part A of chapter 56 of the laws of 2022 requires, on or before July 1, 2022, every local educational agency (LEA) receiving funding from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) act of 2021 to post on its website and submit to the NYSED an updated plan of how such funds will be expended and how the LEA will prioritize spending on non-recurring expenses as defined in section 9-a(1) of part A of chapter 56 of the laws of 2021. Over the course of the 3-year grant, the district will conduct ongoing reviews and consider revisions based on feedback and established need. We encourage all stakeholders to review the current plan and applications and provide feedback at any time. The plans are posted on the district site under the "Documents" heading. We continue to gather input via the following email address: commsurvey@atticacsd.org, so please use that to share your thoughts. As any substantive revisions are made to the plan in the future, we will formally solicit public comment. Thank you for your time and any input you provide.

On Halloween, Middle School Music Teacher Julie Daley took sixth grade students to the Manor House in Batavia where they paraded for the residents before spending some time chatting with residents and passing out donuts and cider. The students had a wonderful time as did the residents talking and learning about each other. Thanks for having us, Manor House! (Photos courtesy of Julie Daley)

Last Monday, Oct. 23, was an historic day at Attica Elementary School. During lunch, our kiddos helped themselves to fresh salad using the elementary school’s new salad bar for the very first time (and with only the occasional helping hand from Principal Sherry Bennett, Food Service Director Kris Wicks or Farm to School Coordinator Alicia Spoth). We acquired this new salad bar thanks to a grant from the American Dairy Association Northeast. While students used this new piece of equipment to make themselves salad last week, they’ll be using it for a Build-A-Yogurt Parfait Day later this month! On Monday, Nov. 6, each classroom will make its way through the bar for a yogurt parfait taste test. Members of our staff will be on hand to explain to students how they can utilize the bar during their lunches. On Tuesday, Nov. 7, the bar will once again be set up for students to build themselves a fresh salad while on Tuesday, Nov. 14, it will be stocked with fixings for students to make themselves a yogurt parfait. Make sure you mark your calendars and remind your kiddos of these exciting, upcoming Build-A days!

Breaking news out of Attica this morning as All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs and All-Everything Music Superstar Taylor Swift were spotted together wandering the hallways of Attica Elementary School. The couple was kind enough to pose for a photo before departing - presumably to one of their mansions to polish their Lombardi Trophies and Grammy Awards. Gosh darn it, they’re a cute couple.

We are pleased to announce that all students enrolled at Attica Central School District will be able to receive a FREE breakfast and lunch meal at school beginning on November 1st, 2023. CEP allows eligible schools participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs to offer school meals at no charge to all students. This means that as of November 1st, 2023, all students enrolled at Attica Central School will receive meals at no cost to your household. No further action is required of you. If you have any further questions, please contact Ms. Wicks, Food Service Director, at (585) 591-0400 x 1195. Thank you.

Third graders in Alyssa Allein’s and Lauren Kocher’s third grade classes experimented with yeast, hydrogen peroxide, disp soap and food coloring to create Elephant’s Toothpaste last week. Students predicted what would happen when the substances were mixed together, observed what happened when they were mixed and then made a conclusion about what had just happened. Our Middle School Library recently transformed for a Halloween-themed book tasting event put on by Library Media Specialist Stacey Donahue. “I set the tables with books that featured ghosts, werewolves, teen vampires, witches, or supernatural mysteries and then, with my best witch’s cackle, welcomed ‘My pretties’ into the library if they dared enter,” said Donahue. “I spoke to them about how important it is to find a book that they’re interested in and that the best way to do that is to sample, or ‘taste’ the book.” After a flashlight-illuminated read-aloud of the first chapter of “The Graveyard Book,”a Newbery Award-winning book by Neil Gaiman, students set out to read the back cover, inside flap and first few pages of a book on their table. They filled out a quick worksheet to tell Donahue whether or not the book hooked them and if they thought it was scary. Students then had the option of checking the book out or sampling another. Donahue’s next book tasting, Attica Middle School Runs on Reading, is scheduled for Nov. 13. (Photos courtesy of Stacey Donahue)

Seniors Ellie Cusmano, Elise Dressel and Maddie Robinson have been named Genesee Region League Volleyball All-Stars while junior Nalani Mercado earned an honorable mention recognition. Ellie was also named Genesee Region League Player of the Year - the second straight year she’s taken the league’s top honor - while Nicole Parkhurst was voted Coach of the Year by her fellow league coaches. Through 17 regular season matches, Ellie, an outside hitter, leads Attica in kills (227) to go along with 142 digs and 53 aces while Maddie is the Blue Devils’ leader in aces (76) and digs (179) and second only to Ellie in kills (159). Elise, a setter, has 427 assists, 49 aces and 61 digs on the season while Nalani, a right-side hitter, has 52 assists, 45 aces and 133 digs heading into the postseason. Parkhurst took over Attica’s varsity volleyball program during its COVID-affected season in spring 2021. In her four seasons at the helm, Parkhurst’s teams have gone 66-10 (.868) and never failed to advance to the semifinals round of sectionals. The Blue Devils are the #1 seeds in this year’s Section V Class C1 Tournament and play their opening round match Friday, Oct. 27 against the winner of Williamson-North Rose-Wolcott. Congratulations, ladies - we can’t wait to see what you do in sectionals! (Photos courtesy of Brennan Bezon)
